Irrigation System Design for Agriculture

Training

Learn to design and install irrigation systems for Smart Farm, covering water source selection, pump sizing, pipe and nozzle selection, sprinkler and drip systems, and planning for fruit orchards to reduce costs and increase yields.

Objectives

To help participants understand the importance of water management in agriculture, design and select appropriate equipment, and install irrigation systems (sprinkler and drip) correctly suited to crop types and field conditions to reduce costs and increase long-term yields.

Course Modules

01

Module 1: Introduction – Water, the Heart of Agriculture

  • Water as the primary factor in agriculture
  • Selecting water sources (groundwater vs. tap water) and assessing source capacity
  • The importance of irrigation methods suited to each crop type
  • Impacts of over-watering and under-watering
02

Module 2: Core Components of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems

  • Water source and reserve tanks: calculating water volume from nozzle count and crop type
  • Main line (2 inches or larger): selecting pressure-rated pipes
  • Sub-lines: delivering water to nozzles (½ or ¾ inch)
  • Water pumps: pressurizing and maintaining consistent water distribution
  • Sprinkler nozzles: choosing drip or spray types based on crop water behavior
03

Module 3: Deep Dive into Drip Irrigation

  • Benefits of drip irrigation: water savings, consistency, easy control, low cost (under 5 THB per emitter)
  • Soil considerations: avoiding waterlogging to prevent root rot
  • Planting techniques for drip systems: raising plant bases to prevent standing water
  • Testing to find the optimal water volume for each crop
04

Module 4: Selecting Irrigation Equipment

  • Pump sizing: matching horsepower to pipe size and water volume (e.g., 2-inch pipe needs a 2 HP pump)
  • PE pipes: suitable for small diameters (<20 mm), low-cost, ideal for small-scale farms
  • PVC pipes: highly durable, easy to source, ideal for main lines (2 inches and up)
  • Preventing costly damage through proper equipment selection
05

Module 5: Planning Irrigation for Fruit Orchards

  • Water volume by crop type and soil condition: designing a compatible system
  • Water by growth stage: adjusting volume according to growth phases (e.g., durian flowering)
  • Plant spacing: designing layouts so plants do not compete for nutrients, water, and sunlight
  • Payback period: aligning the irrigation plan with short-term and long-term harvest goals
  • Irrigation and disease management: preventing disease and bacteria through good irrigation design
